Sustainable Fashion Event

On Wednesday 25 May, the Sustainable Fashion Event, organised by the Mission for Energy Transition, was held as part of the 10th Monaco Fashion Week.

The event was held in English, in partnership with the Fashion Council of Monaco and Monaco City Hall . Over the course of three days, Monaco City Hall set up a new collection of clothing for local designers, with the aim of encouraging reuse and the circular economy.

How can the two seemingly opposing worlds of the environment and fashion be reconciled? Between greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and microplastics, fashion is one of the world’s most polluting industries.

This is the issue that the public was invited to discuss with several committed stakeholders from the international and Monegasque fashion worlds:

- Federica Nardoni Spinetta, President and Founder of the Fashion Council of Monaco;

- Matteo Ward, an “activist, responsible and innovative” designer;

- Claudio Betti, owner of the Spinnaker brand, representing Camera Buyer Italia – The Best Shops;

- Inès Bensalah, for Inessa Creations , a new National Energy Transition Pact Ambassador, who describes herself as a “scientist of responsible fashion”;

- Alexis Gianotti, for Giannotti Monaco, a local eco-friendly designer ; and

- the winners of the Monte-Carlo Fashion Week Sustainable Contest, announced the previous evening: Vérabuccia and Regenesi .

The presentations were followed by a lively question and answer session with the audience.

The circular economy, the selection of materials, the role of the consumer and changing business models, sales prices, salvage... all of these issues were addressed to reach one conclusion: the search for meaning, utility and durability in fashion is more vital than ever. The textile industry knows that it needs to reinvent itself, and Monaco is full of ideas on how to create the foundations for sustainable fashion and how to produce and consume in a different way.

Building on its commitments, the Fashion Council of Monaco, along with several committed designers, signed the National Energy Transition Pact last February.
