Launch of Klaxit during the European Mobility Week 2020

klaxit-semaine-mobilité

The 19th Mobility Week was held in the Principality from 14 to 20 September 2020. Let’s take the opportunity to look back over the highlights of the latest edition of this annual event, which aims to raise awareness around the adoption of new travel behaviours.

Mobility Week is a European event that seeks to increase awareness of behaviours we can adopt to combat the urban pollution caused by transport, and to improve quality of life in urban environments.

In the Principality, the week began with a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Monaco’s railway station. Officially opened in 1999, the station now offers services and equipment which are at the cutting edge of eco-sustainability.

At the very end of the week, the Port district was partially closed to traffic to allow numerous visitors to get around on foot, bike, skateboard, scooter and roller blades to mark the “Biking Sunday” initiative.

These activities are part of the ongoing environmental policy launched by Prince Albert II. Clean mobility is a key issue for the Principality, which already offers a range of eco-friendly transport options: Monabike electric bike stations, electric and biodiesel buses and now... car sharing, with the arrival in the country of Klaxit.

Klaxit, the home-to-work car-sharing app

This year’s Mobility Week offered the perfect opportunity to officially launch the car-sharing app Klaxit in the Principality.

Shared mobility: the theory

Klaxit, the leading French home-to-work car-sharing service, is open to all. The goal is to convince the 50,000 or so employees who travel to work in the Principality every day to opt for car sharing as one way to reduce vehicle traffic and thereby cut our carbon footprint.

The 25 signatories of the National Energy Transition Pact, who represent 9,300 employees, are taking part in a one-year trial of the app. The objective of this trial year is to test the viability of the app in situ.

The signatories involved include Princess Grace Hospital and Carrefour, who employ 2,700 and 300 people respectively. These two major players in the Principality are advocates for sustainable development and the coming together of the community around a common goal: working in partnership towards energy transition.

In practice

The signatories featured in the app will be supported throughout the trial phase with workshops, documentation, reports and updates.

Klaxit puts drivers and passengers in contact with each other via collection points along established routes. Roles can be switched around depending on need: a passenger one day can be a driver the next.

Flexibility and trust are emphasised in this tool, which will guarantee a free ride in the event that the planned journey is cancelled. It is worth noting that until the end of 2020, journeys within a 30-km radius of Monaco will be funded by the Government. Beyond this distance, the cost of travel will be 10 cents per kilometre, with a guaranteed minimum charge of €1.50.

The health situation is unfortunately restricting capacity, but the trial will nonetheless help to build a ‘critical mass’ of users. It will initiate a change in the behaviour of commuters and make it possible to assess the benefits.

The ultimate aim is to reduce traffic density back to 1990 levels. The stated goal is therefore to change habits in a region where there is strong potential and this effort already appears to be well under way: 300 people have already signed up in the first week following the launch.
