Mobility Week 2020: from Riviera Electric Challenge to Monaco ON electric vehicle charging points

The Riviera Electric Challenge, an event that brings together France, Monaco and Italy, three countries with a shared history and strong ties of friendship, was held on 10 and 11 September. The 100% electric rally was organised as part of the EVER exhibition at Grimaldi Forum Monaco from 10 to 12 September.

Coming just a few days before European Mobility Week (14 to 20 September), the event provided an opportunity to link to the launch of the electric charging station programme, MONACO ON.

A motoring event to help the environment

Organised on the fringes of EVER 2020, the Riviera Electric Challenge 2020 follows in the footsteps of previous successful events. The challenge aims to bring together the leading companies and communities working on incorporating electric vehicles as part of their fleets.

The goal was to complete a route in an electric vehicle using as little energy as possible. The route ran between Cagnes-sur-Mer and Monaco, the towns which founded the event. At every stage, participants were asked questions about the implementation of the energy transition in each location. We are enormously proud to announce that our team took part in the rally and was awarded a prize in the Energy Transition Questions Challenge by H.E. Mr Bernard Fautrier!

For the third year in a row, an evening event was organised at the midway point in Dolceacqua, a commune in the Province of Imperia. The event was attended by the local mayor and other Italian dignitaries.

Participants then departed the Italian commune on the return leg, headed for the finish line on the esplanade in front of the Grimaldi Forum.

The challenge was able to demonstrate that eco-friendly electric vehicles are today a viable option in terms of performance and reliability, not least since Monaco now has plenty of charging points.

MONACO ON: electric vehicle charging points

As Marie-Pierre Gramaglia, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, noted: ‘Eco-friendly vehicles are the preferred option in an urban area like ours. It is with this in mind that the Government is today developing an increasingly extensive high-performance network of charging points, which will be gradually given a new look, with MONACO ON branding, so that they are easier to spot.’

In August 2020, electric and hybrid models accounted for nearly 7% of all vehicles in Monaco. The demand for charging is growing, as is the charging power required for increasingly high-performance vehicles.

The Government is gradually replacing the self-service stations in public car parks and on the nation’s streets with electric charging stations comprising several charging points. The aim is to meet demand for more powerful, faster charging at easily identifiable stations which are available to as many people as possible.

The stations can already be found in the Casino, Grimaldi Forum and Portier car parks, and Fontvieille Shopping Centre will have one soon. A total of 91 rapid charging points have been or are currently being installed (71 x 7kva points and 20 x 22kva points). At street level, there are nine locations with 11 rapid charging points, 7 semi-rapid charging points and 4 slow charging points.

Roll-out continues on public roads in dedicated, free and easily accessible zones (close to shops and frequently visited locations). As with those in public car parks, the on-street charging points will eventually feature new, bright yellow branding, which will make them more visible.

Since 1994, the Prince’s Government has pursued a policy that strongly incentivises a switch to electric vehicles, offering subsidies to help purchase such vehicles, free charging, a reduction on the cost of public car park season tickets, free on-street parking and a free annual vehicle registration sticker.

To support the growing number of electric vehicles, nearly 1,000 free charging points (for two- and four-wheel vehicles) are available in the Principality’s public car parks, and there are 11 rapid charging points for public use on the country’s streets.

Now, every Monegasque resident is less than 300 metres from a free public charging point, an incentive to mainstream electric vehicles!
