World Energy Council
The World Energy Council (WEC) is a world leading organization dedicated to promote the sustainable supply and use of energy for the greatest benefit of all people. A non-profit, non-governmental organization, accredited by the United Nations, the World Energy Council contributes to discussions on global and regional energy issues by organizing events around the world. It publishes summary reports for decision-makers based on factual analysis, case studies and strategic orientations as well as the conclusions of the international working groups it organizes. It is made up of national committees, representing nearly 100 countries around the world, and is composed of leaders from the energy sector.

The Monegasque Committee was created in 1988 and admitted on the occasion of an Executive Assembly held in Stockholm. Currently chaired by M. Thomas Battaglione, CEO SMEG, its first President was Mr René Clerissi. Its articles of association stipulate that its Office is appointed by Sovereign Decision; it is made up of individuals, not representatives of corporate entities. The Office is appointed for three years. It comprises a President, a Vice President, a Secretary, a Treasurer and five Advisors.
Since the Committee was first established, the understanding of Monaco’s energy-use characteristics has improved, particularly through the development of the Climate Plan and the White Paper on Energy Transition. Renewable energies have been developed, in addition to incentives for energy savings.

During its periodic meetings, the Committee discusses such issues with a view to putting forward proposals to the Public Authorities.
From the onset of its discussions, the Committee adopted an overall strategy for its actions focused on three areas:
- To highlight the Principality’s positioning in favour of renewable energies and at the same time to promote energy efficiency in all areas of energy use,
- To use the Principality’s geopolitical position in the Mediterranean Region, considered to be a specific area at the crossroads of three « regions » recognised by WEC (Europe, Africa, Asia),
- To use the Principality’s attractiveness in organising meetings, congresses, exhibitions etc, as well as its reputation in terms of Sustainable Development, to announce initiatives in line with WEC objectives..
