The energy transition is gathering pace!

1-Ensemble vers une économie bas carbone

At the Mission for Energy Transition, we’re keenly aware that the most impactful changes take time: substantial work is carried out to inform and educate in order to promote awareness and a search for practical solutions. Recent weeks have focused on key issues such as eco-friendly digital technology and electric transport.

Making digital technology eco-friendly in Monaco

On 6 October, the Mission for Energy Transition took part in two debates at the Monaco Business 2021 exhibition. The idea was, first, to raise awareness among businesses about eco-friendly digital technology and, second, to explain the assistance available to help them introduce low-carbon strategies.

During the first debate, Julien Dejanovic, Director of Digital Services, and Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux, Director of the Mission for Energy Transition, discussed digital sobriety and practical solutions to ensure that digital technology consumes less energy. Regardless of the technology chosen, there will be an environmental impact, so it is important to strike the right balance between technological capability and energy efficiency. When it comes to energy consumption, the following approach should be adopted: 1/ Avoid, i.e. eliminate avoidable sources of energy consumption; 2/ Reduce, i.e. improve the energy efficiency of IT equipment and networks; 3/ Invest in renewable energy to power IT systems.

In the second debate, Project Leader Isabelle Curau-Bloch presented the tools that have been designed for businesses: the support offered to National Pact signatories to develop and roll out low-carbon strategies, and the assistance available via the Green Fund to finance energy transition projects, covering up to 70% of project costs.

Electric transport is increasingly attractive

The symbolic threshold of 10% of vehicles registered in Monaco being electric or hybrid has recently been reached, and the growing interest among Monegasque businesses in switching their vehicle fleets is clear. They’ve been won over by the arguments: electric vehicles are cheaper to run, quieter and less polluting, and subsidies are available.

Businesses commit to going fully electric

Some Monegasque organisations have undertaken to replace their entire fleets with new, more eco-friendly vehicles.

Two such examples are Monegasque businesses which have signed the Pact:

  • Suisscourtage Assurances could soon have a fleet entirely made up of eco-friendly cars. The firm has replaced its vehicles in just a few months: 30 cars are already operational and others are on order for early 2022.
  • For its part, Monaco Electricité System (MES) et Climatisation Service et System (C2S) has converted its 54-strong fleet to eco-friendly vehicles, with another 27 due for delivery or to come in future. This fantastic effort by MES covers nearly 100% of its vehicles.

New success for E-Rally and Riviera Electric Challenge

Proof of the enthusiasm for electric vehicles can be seen in the success of electric motorsports events like the E-Rally and Riviera Electric Challenge.

The E-Rally for electric vehicles was held from 20 to 24 October 2021. The 100% electric and hydrogen-powered Monte-Carlo Rally returned with a challenging course, comprising a 350-kilometre time trial split into 15 special regularity stages and nearly 1,000 kilometres of road section. It concluded in the Principality with a final challenge: finding a place to charge at one of the numerous Monaco ON electric charging stations. To help, crews made use of the YourMonaco map showing available charging points in real time (https://yourmonaco.mc/carte ).

The Riviera Electric Challenge (REC) was held a few weeks earlier in September. This international rally aims to promote electric transport and showcases the charging infrastructure available along the route. The Mission for Energy Transition competed in the challenge for the second year in a row. The goal is to use as little energy as possible!

Our team of energy specialists , including our driver Raphaël Carossi and his two co-drivers, Marie-Pierre Fassio and Géraldine Fievet, proudly represented the Mission for Energy Transition in the race!

This progress shows that a virtuous dynamic is already in place: awareness is growing and lines are shifting. The energy transition is gaining momentum in the Principality, becoming an everyday reality!
