Turning yachting from blue to green

To mark World Oceans Day on Tuesday 8 June, the Mission for Energy Transition organised an event that brought together several stakeholders from the yachting and maritime sectors, all of whom have signed the National Energy Transition Pact. Led by Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux, Director of the Mission for Energy Transition, and then Armelle Roudaut-Lafon, Director of Maritime Affairs, the event aimed to take stock of the actions already put in place or currently being developed by seven Pact signatories.


Annabelle Jaeger-Seydoux first summarised the current challenges facing these sectors: reducing their carbon footprint to safeguard the oceans while enabling continued growth in the yachting sector, a key part of the Principality’s economy. For his part, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco Bernard d’Alessandri was keen to emphasise the Club’s commitment to the energy transition, including by holding the 8th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge from 6 to 10 July 2021. 


The yachting sector regularly encourages numerous owners to become not just stakeholders but first and foremost decision-makers with their commitments to reducing the Principality’s carbon footprint. Bernard d’Alessandri noted the SEA (Superyacht Eco Association) Index , which evaluates and measures the CO2 emissions (design and use) of super yachts (more than 40 m). The idea is that this will evolve over time to become a fully transparent global standard offering an assessment of the energy impact of large yachts.


Seven initiatives to reduce carbon footprint in the yachting sector 

Five other participants joined Armelle Roudaut-Lafon and Bernard d’Alessandri in speaking at the event:


  • François Richard from Lanéva Boats discussed the innovations that have enabled him to develop electric boats and, in the case of certain yachts, to encourage owners to replace their engines rather than purchase a new vessel. 


  • Claire Ferandier-Sicard, the founder of Etyc, helps yacht crews to retrain so that they can rethink how they work on board their vessels and adopt more eco-friendly behaviours. 


  • Olivier Lavagna, Director of the Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco (SEPM), highlighted the electrification of ports in the Principality to enable yachts to take advantage of an appropriate power supply and thereby reduce their environmental impact. 


Raising awareness was the key theme of the event, which is why David Gamba, from the Monegasque Sanitation Company (SMA), and Julien Guesdon, from Catalano Shipping Services Mediterranean, decided to address the issue of port waste management. 


  • David Gamba stressed that superyachts have very substantial needs in terms of waste sorting. In effect, three trucks from the company’s fleet of electric vehicles used to manage different waste streams (glass, household waste, plastic) are required to optimise waste sorting for a superyacht. However, the on-board weighing system with which SMA’s vehicles are equipped helps to improve waste quantification and optimise routes.


  • Julien Guesdon discussed solutions for mooring boats. With ports overcrowded, yachts are opting to drop anchor at sea, which causes ecological problems for the seabed.
