Building insulation

External thermal insulation

External thermal insulation is a construction process which is rapidly growing in popularity. It is a process which makes sense since, in both new-build and renovation projects, it allows for continuous, high-performance insulation and reduces thermal bridging. It does not result in any loss of living space.

As part of a renovation project where the facade is being updated at the same time, external thermal insulation can improve the look of a building to enhance the existing construction while at the same time reaching levels of performance equal to a new build. When an order is issued to restore a facade, external thermal insulation is the best solution for complying with the requirements on the thermal performance of walls. For construction projects, the use of external thermal insulation is all the more appropriate as it fully meets the thermal regulation requirements.

Although it is not suitable for all buildings (such as those which have large areas of glazing, lots of openings or significant constraints relating to urban aesthetics), it is very often a good solution and offers numerous advantages that are important to be aware of – chief among these is its excellent performance throughout the year.

Its space saving qualities also remain a strong argument, particularly for small areas (the volumes do not change since the insulation is installed externally).

The financial aspect is another advantage which should not be ignored: the energy savings that can be achieved through external insulation are very attractive over time.

Finally, the insulation is installed externally, and so the interior remains habitable while the work is carried out.

Expertise in this area is growing in the Principality, as elsewhere, with some initial public installations (Museum of Anthropology, Scouts’ building, Heliport) and some forthcoming private projects.

The latter could, with the agreement of the project developers, offer an opportunity for interested stakeholders to visit the construction sites. Please get in touch if you are interested in getting involved (transition-energetique@gouv.mc )

Monegasque companies have the expertise, so do not hesitate to contact them.
