Electric powered

Electric powered

At the start of 2023, environmentally-friendly vehicles accounted for almost 14% of the Monegasque fleet.

However, since 1994, the Prince's Government has been pursuing an incentive policy in favour of electromobility:

  • Purchase bonus: Action in favour of environmentally-friendly vehicles (including two-wheelers and heavy goods vehicles)
  • Free charging in public and on-street car parks
  • Discounted parking passes
  • Free annual registration stamp

In addition, to promote responsible use of the Monaco ON recharge, the Government of Monaco has worked on a dedicated clip and thanks its hero, Lucas di Grassi, 2016/2017 Formula E World Champion and Monaco resident, for his time, investment and commitment.

Two-wheeled vehicles

With regard to two-wheelers, of which there are many in the Principality, the Government also wishes to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles by increasing the purchase aid to 40% of the price of the vehicle, including VAT and excluding options, with a ceiling of €4,500 (compared with 30%, with a ceiling of €3,000 previously).

The MTE has also recently produced an overview of the range of electric two-wheelers available in Monaco.

New for vans and trucks

An incentive scheme is in place for professionals (companies, the self-employed) and associations that equip themselves with more environmentally-friendly electric or hybrid electric/petrol vehicles in the course of their business.

Amended on 26 June 2023:

  • For the purchase of light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5 tonnes and emitting less than 21g/km of CO²), additional flat-rate aid of €3,000 is added to the purchase aid, amounting to 30% ( capped at €10,000) of the price of the vehicle excluding VAT and excluding options.
  • For the purchase of electric goods vehicles (> 3.5 tonnes and emitting less than 21g/km of CO²), a premium of 20% of the price of the vehicle excluding VAT and excluding options (up to a maximum of €40,000).

The advantages of an environmentally-friendly vehicle

  • Less polluting and non-emitting of CO2
  • Reduces dependence on fossil fuels
  • Quieter
  • Less expensive to run and maintain
  • Enjoys certain privileges (e.g. free on-street parking by Monaco City Council for electric vehicles, reduced rate for public car park season ticket holders, etc.).

According to the consultancy Carbone 4, electric vehicles can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of mobility solutions. You have to look at the whole life cycle - from construction to recycling - to understand that in France or Monaco, the footprint of an electric car is divided by three compared with that of a combustion vehicle. This difference, which is not as great in Germany or Europe, is explained by electricity production, which is nuclear in France whereas it is coal-fired in Germany, for example.
There are plenty of preconceived ideas!

Electric vehicles VS internal combustion vehicles

Are electric vehicles more environmentally friendly than combustion-powered vehicles, despite the impact of battery manufacture? Is this the case for all models, everywhere in the world?

These are questions that are regularly raised in the media and in personal discussions, and it's often difficult to distinguish the true from the false...

To help you see things more clearly, here are the materials presented at our conferences on the subject:
