The Prince’s Government, in collaboration with the Monaco Port Authority (SEPM) and the Monegasque Sanitation Company (SMA) have announced the installation of 42 strainer baskets in rainwater drainage grates directly connected to the sea on Quai Jarlan at Port Hercule. The initiative, launched at the request of SEPM, aims to strengthen measures to preserve the marine environment by reducing waste-related pollution such as cigarette filters.
Designed by Pollustock, the strainer baskets were strategically installed with the primary aim of preventing this waste from ending up in the sea. Their installation on Quai Jarlan is a pro-active response to growing concerns about marine pollution and highlights the ongoing commitment of the Prince’s Government to protecting marine ecosystems.
The impact of cigarette filters on the environment: a necessary reminder
Cigarette filters, a significant source of pollution that has devastating consequences for marine ecosystems, contain non-biodegradable plastics that disintegrate slowly and release harmful chemicals into the water. Marine animals often ingest this waste, which causes serious damage to their health and disrupts the ecological equilibrium.
SEPM has also added a significant number of ashtrays at Port Hercule to facilitate the proper disposal of cigarette butts. This additional measure underscores the commitment of SEPM to creating a more environmentally friendly port environment.
Through this initiative with the Monegasque Sanitation Company (SMA) and Pollustock, the Prince’s Government and SEPM have enhanced their joint efforts by working with specialists in waste management and environmental solution design. The alliance is an illustration of their commitment to a more sustainable future and the preservation of Monaco’s precious marine environment.
